Features & Functionality

Which social networks do you support for login?
Janrain currently supports more than 30 identity providers and social networks for site registration and login. These include: Facebook, Google, Twitter, PayPal, Yahoo!, LinkedIn, Windows Live, Salesforce, Foursquare, Orkut, AOL, Blogger, Flickr, Hyves, Livejournal, Mixi, MyOpenID, Myspace, Netlog, Renren, Sina Weibo, SoundCloud, Verisign, VS-Netzwerke and WordPress.
Can users associate multiple social network identities with a single account on our site?
Yes. Janrain offers an account mapping feature that enables users to link multiple social network accounts with a single account on your site. Janrain stores the mapping on your behalf so it does not require any schema changes to your user database. A user can be prompted to map multiple accounts at the time of site registration, when sharing content or activity to multiple social networks, and via a profile management page.
What profile data is available from the various social networks and identity providers?
Please refer to our Provider Guide for a full list of available profile data from each identity provider and social network supported by Janrain. Websites and mobile applications must request permission from their users to access various social network profile fields. Janrain offers an intuitive setup guide that allows customers to select which social profile information will be requested for use in registration, personalization and user insights.
How much information can I collect on initial login/registration?  Can I collect more later on?
In order to ensure successful completion of registration, Janrain recommends requesting a minimal set of social profile data and only the data that will be actively used for user intelligence or site personalization. You can subsequently request more data by changing the global settings which will require users to re-permission your site at login. Consult the Provider Guide for information on available data fields for each identity provider.
Is social profile data returned from Facebook for users with private profiles?
If a user marks their Facebook profile as private, you can still gain access to his/her profile data once granted via the permission screen which appears during authentication. Only when a user actively chooses to hide certain profile data fields will you not have access to those individual fields. For additional clarification, the Facebook privacy settings apply to how a user's friends and contacts have access to their information when viewed from within www.facebook.com. Application permissions allow a user to control how third-party sites or applications access data stored in a user's profile. Authentication with Facebook automatically shares basic profile information with your site, including display name and profile photo. In order to receive additional data, sites must request access via Facebook’s permission screen.
How do I integrate social login through Janrain with my website?
We offer several methods to integrate social login with your website: JavaScript widgets can be easily embedded on your page or presented as a modal overlay. You can also design and deploy your own custom sign-in interface using intuitive dashboard styling tools or via our API. Janrain offers code samples and helper classes in various programing languages to help you get started.
Which social networks do you support with your social sharing feature?
We currently offer social sharing for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Myspace, Mixi and via email to Gmail and Yahoo! contacts.
What types of content or activities can be shared from my site or mobile app using the Janrain's social sharing feature?
The Janrain social sharing widget can be invoked automatically based on a user’s action or by the user directly at any point of user engagement on your site. Pages read, comments, purchases, product reviews, accomplishments or other activities from your site can then be shared to a user’s friends on multiple social networks from a single interface.
Can I customize the activity message that gets shared to the user’s news feed?
Yes. Rich activity message content shared to the user’s Facebook news feed is fully customizable. You can include a thumbnail image, link, page or product description, video or any other messaging that helps promote your brand.
How do I integrate social sharing through Janrain with my website?
It is quick and easy to get up and running with Janrain social sharing. Simply select which social networks and email providers you would like to support within the Janrain product dashboard and paste some JavaScript code into your website. That’s all there is to it. APIs are available for advanced functions and customizations to the sharing experience.

Technology

What are the technical requirements to integrate Janrain’s products on my site?
Janrain offers its products as software as a service (SaaS) with a full set of APIs and JavaScript widgets that are easy to deploy. Knowledge of web protocols such as HTTP/HTTPS and the ability to parse data formats such as JSON and XML are all that is required to implement and leverage Janrain products.
Is personal data encrypted?
Janrain Engage does not store user data returned from the identity provider during the process of social logins. All data transmitted during the authentication process is transported between the identity provider and the Janrain customer exclusively over SSL. Social profile data stored in Janrain Capture is not encrypted while at rest but is exclusively transmitted over SSL. The use of advanced physical and software security measures, authentication tokens, and the fact that user passwords are encrypted eliminates the risk of jeopardizing a user’s social or traditional passwords and personally identifiable information.
Can I export Janrain analytics?
You can always access social, usage and user analytics via your application dashboard or export and download the data into a .csv file. With the exported .csv file you are free to analyze the data in the program of your choice and your desired method of analysis.
Do you integrate with 3rd party analytics platforms like Adobe SiteCatalyst (Omniture), Webtrends, CoreMetrics or Google Analytics?
Janrain provides integrations with leading analytics platforms to make it easy to analyze social and registration events such as login, sharing, social graph and segmentation attributes. A pre-built integration with Adobe SiteCatalyst makes it easy to correlate social profile attributes with the on-site activity data you are already collecting today. Analytics hooks are also built into Janrain products to track social and traditional logins, sharing and referrals.
